Maintain consistent volume levels among different audio clips in your project

from the official website.

An audio compressor helps you manage the dynamic range of an audio track, ensuring consistent volume levels and making your overall mix more balanced. Compression improves speech clarity by making quieter sounds more audible, making it easier for viewers to understand dialogue in noisy environments. If you're working on a project with multiple clips that have varying volume levels, using a compressor can help maintain consistent volume levels throughout the entire project.

Navigate to the left sidebar, go to the Audio tab, and select the Compressor tool.

Select an audio clip on the Timeline. Adjust the compressor parameters:

Threshold: This is the level at which the compression begins to affect the audio. Any input signal above this threshold will be reduced in volume, while signals below it remain unchanged.

Ratio: This determines how much the compressor reduces the volume of the signals that exceed the threshold. A ratio of 4:1 means that for every 4dB increase in input level above the threshold, the output level will only increase by 1dB.

Attack Time: This is the time it takes for the compressor to start reducing the volume once the threshold has been exceeded. A fast attack time (e.g., 0.5ms) will quickly reduce the volume of sudden sounds, while a slower attack time (e.g., 10ms) allows more of the initial transient to pass through before compression begins.

Release Time: This is the time it takes for the compressor to return to its normal operation once the input signal falls below the threshold. A fast release time (e.g., 5ms) will quickly allow the volume to recover after a peak, while a slower release time (e.g., 100ms) will hold the volume down for a longer period after the peak has passed.

Output Gain: This control adjusts the overall output level of the compressor. It allows you to make up for any volume loss caused by compression and set the final desired level of the compressed signal.

Blend: This parameter is used to combine the original uncompressed audio with the compressed version.

The modifications will be applied to your selected audio clip automatically.
